Fyre Festival
From Invertopedia, the encyclopedia of how things fail
Fyre Festival was sold as a luxury music festival on a Bahamian island, with a promo video of models and packages reportedly priced up to $399,995[2]. Guests who arrived on Great Exuma found rows of white tents, too little food and nobody in charge, and organizers called it off within a day[2][6][4]. Billy McFarland pleaded guilty to wire fraud and, in October 2018, was sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to forfeit about $26 million[7][8].

The bet
A festival could launch a booking app. Fyre Media, the company behind it, ran a website for booking celebrity talent[9][2], and the festival was meant to put it on the map through influencers. Kendall Jenner and other models promoted it[4], and Jenner was paid $275,000 to do so[10].
Guests were promised villas and lodges, food, art and music, and a VIP-configured Boeing 737 from Miami[2]. The bet was that the money from ticket sales would arrive in time to build all of it.
What happened
| Dec 2016 – Jan 2017 | Paid influencers, Kendall Jenner among them, and a promo video of models start selling the festival.[1][2][4] |
|---|---|
| Apr 27, 2017 | Guests land on Great Exuma to find white tents in place of villas, and a shortage of food, lighting and security.[2] |
| Apr 28, 2017 | Organizers say "the physical infrastructure was not in place on time" and postpone. Inbound flights are canceled and the second weekend is called off.[2][6][4] |
| Jun 30, 2017 | McFarland is arrested at his Manhattan home and charged with wire fraud over false claims to investors.[9] |
| Mar 2018 | McFarland pleads guilty to two counts of wire fraud.[11] |
| Jun – Jul 2018 | While on pretrial release he runs NYC VIP Access, selling tickets to events it had no access to. He is charged in June and pleads guilty on July 26[11][7]. He also admits the SEC's charges.[3] |
| Oct 11, 2018 | Sentenced to six years in prison and ordered to forfeit about $26 million.[7][8] |
| Apr 2021 | The bankruptcy trustee settles with 277 ticket holders for $7,220 each.[12] |
| May 2022 | McFarland is released early to a halfway house.[13] |
| Aug 2023 – Apr 2025 | He announces Fyre Festival II and sells 100 presale tickets at $499[13]. Set for Playa del Carmen, Mexico, from May 30, 2025, it is postponed with no new date, and he puts the brand up for sale.[14] |
The kill shot
The marketing went out before the logistics existed, and the money behind it was raised on lies.
A guest told NPR the site "looked like a disaster relief area" and "There was no coordination. There was nobody in charge."[6] The catering that cost extra was, as one user posted, "a slice of untoasted bread, two slices prepackaged cheese, and a side salad."[4]
The money side was worse. The SEC said McFarland showed investors a doctored brokerage statement claiming over $2.5 million in stock when the account held under $1,500[3]. NPR reported that he told investors he had event cancellation insurance he did not have, and "exclusive" artist deals that did not exist[11].
Red flags ignored
- Price with no ceiling. Packages reportedly up to $399,995, for a first-year festival with no track record.[2]
- Influencers, not infrastructure. The models were paid and posting[4][10] while the site was still unbuilt[2].
- Claims nobody checked. Insurance and artist deals that did not exist.[11]
- A pattern. McFarland ran a fake ticket business while awaiting trial, and the judge called him a "serial fraudster."[7]
The cost
$27.4 million raised from over 100 investors across McFarland's companies, by the SEC's count[3]. A six-year sentence, an order to forfeit about $26 million[8] and restitution of just over $26 million[7]. Ticket holders who settled with the bankruptcy trustee in 2021 were to get $7,220 each, $2 million in all[12]. The $245,300 the brand fetched on eBay in 2025 is less than 1% of the restitution he was ordered to pay[5][7].
The inversion
Sell only what you could deliver tomorrow if every ticket sold today. Build the site first, then turn on the marketing.
What survived
The lawsuits. The bankruptcy trustee, Gregory Messer, filed at least 14 suits against agencies and influencers, and Kendall Jenner settled for $90,000[10]. Two documentaries came out in January 2019, Netflix's Fyre and Hulu's Fyre Fraud[15].
McFarland kept going. The Fyre name, trademarks and accounts sold on eBay in July 2025 for $245,300, to a buyer not named at the time[5][1]. In January 2026 he told Parade he was planning an event on Venezuela's Margarita Island and has been paying restitution monthly[16].
